The mediaeval church after which the parish was named was sited at the foot of Cartron Hill and dedicated to St Ceannanach, known formerly as St  Gregory.  By 1841, the church as in runs and had been replaced by the church at Garraunbaun.  In 1839,  800-1000  people were attending service there.  The church was shown on the O.S. Map of 1898.
